Borrowing Books

You can now use our library computer from home! Check how many books you have out on loan and renew them. You can even search to see if we have a book you want to read or reserve a book someone else has on loan.

To use Oliver just click on the link oliver.childwallsc.co.uk/oliver

From the Library home page you can read about our Author of the Month, see what our Recommended Reads are and look at new titles we have in the LRC.

New Titles Available from the LRC

To look at your borrower record you must click on OPAC and login. Your username is the same as your school username i.e. 07smithj or 02js05 and the password is “password”. You can change this when you log in.

At the OPAC search screen you can look for a book by typing the title in the search box. Click in the tickbox and you can send a request to the LRC.

  • Students in Years 7, 8, & 9 can borrow up to 3 books.
  • Students in Years 10 & 11 can borrow up to 4 books.
  • Students in sixth form can borrow up to 6 books.

All loans are for 2 weeks, if students need books for longer they need to renew them at the LRC desk. Staff can also reserve books for students (such as Snakehead and Kiss)

There are 3 types of books in the LRC:

  • Fiction/Story
  • Non-fiction/Information
  • Reference

Fiction/Story

These are organised in alphabetical (A-Z) order by the author’s surname. The first 3 letters of the surname is shown on the spine or side of the book so you can find what you are looking for more quickly and easily.

Non-fiction/Information

These books can be used to help with homework, coursework and revision. They are shelved in number order called the Dewey Decimal Classification System or Dewey for short. This number order is shown over the page. These books also have a coloured sticker on the spine.

Reference

These are usually large information books and cannot be taken out of the LRC. This is because they contain important information that other people may want to look at. Examples of reference books include dictionaries, encyclopaedias and atlases.

Dewey Classification and the colour code used in the LRC

Dewey Classification is used in nearly all libraries, here the books are put in numeric order, and the numbers start at 001 and run to 999.

To make things easier we also use coloured stickers for each different subject area at Childwall LRC.
