The Year 9 Humanities Reward ceremony took place on the 9th of December in Childwall Sports College. The pupils were involved in a cross curricular project on India in their humanities subjects. This was to further develop the pupil’s knowledge of India and explore India’s diverse and multicultural population and how this diversity is linked to inequality in wealth and quality of life.
In Geography the pupils studied a variety of aspects of the culture in Indian. The pupils studied life in Dharavi slum in Mumbai, one of the largest slums in the world, and the implications the people face by the governments plan to create a world class city by 2013 demolishing peoples home and livelihoods. The pupils also took part in an Indian dance and Henna workshop to develop further their knowledge of Indian culture.
In History the pupils focused on India when it was part of the British Empire. They looked at the benefits of Britain having India as part of its empire and the downside of this for the people living within the colony of India. They looked at the role played by significant individuals such as Ghandi and Nehru, in bringing about independence from British rule in 1947. Pupils wrote a speech to the British Parliament in 1947 stating their reasons why India should have its independence.
In Re the pupils have produced videos about the poverty in India ad ways we can help to raise money to alleviate the problem. They also studied and produced brochures on Hinduism.
Congratulations to all the pupils that received rewards on the night and took part in the project. On behalf of the humanities faculty I would like to thank everyone that contributed to the success of the Year 9 humanities rewards ceremony.
