Geography Field Trip to Iceland

The Geography Department at Childwall Sports College established that part of its 'A' Level fieldwork is completed on-site in Iceland. This has always proved to be a wonderful experience for staff and students. The group set off from Manchester flying to Reykjavik, capital of Iceland. The students conducted themselves superbly well at all times. The hotel was excellent and provided lots of opportunities for the students to socialise with other students. Students enjoyed eating in the restaurants in Reykjavik. The important academic work in terms of the Physical Geography was superb. The students had an Icelandic Guide, Edward, who had both Masters and PhD Degrees from England and spoke perfect English. The weather was almost typical of Iceland being at the beginning, cold and rainy and only reaching 6˚ centigrade. The students thoroughly enjoyed the aeroplane flight to Heimaey which was the highlight of the week’s residential for the students. The students flew in a small plane and having reached Heimaey were able to climb a local volcano which was obviously something that students and staff may never experience again.

The week’s residential ended with a visit to the superb Blue Lagoon which always impresses and the students of 2006 were no exception. The students were delighted to be able to have the opportunity to complete some of their coursework in Iceland and on arrival back to Manchester Airport were all sorry to be home but having gained some wonderful information about their Physical Geography coursework. We now expect some wonderful results from our students due to the exceptional coursework provided by staff at Childwall Sports College. “This will have been a wonderful experience for our 'A' Level Geography students. One of our overriding aims at Childwall is to provide superb learning opportunities. This will have been one of the most memorable occasions in the academic life of students studying 'A' Level Geography at Childwall Sports College.
