Passion and Tragedy at Liverpool University

Wednesday 17th December 2008

On Wednesday, 17th December, after a full day at school, 38 pupils and staff from the English Faculty attended workshops and a performance of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ at the Liverpool University Guild. It was a long evening which started with a ‘meet and greet’ in the theatre at 4.00pm, followed by various workshops and a full performance of Shakespeare’s famous play which did not finish until 10.30 pm!

All the pupils are to be highly commended for throwing themselves into the event with such enthusiasm, cooperation and energy. Everyone’s behaviour was exemplary; the organisers of the event were full of praise for our pupils and said how much they enjoyed having them. Well done. There were workshops on: the text, directing, performing and dance. The university provided a super buffet (Mr Stackpoole was right; the food is excellent at the university...though I was a tad upset not to get a muffin!)

The play, performed by the student amateur dramatic group, was first class; the pupils said it was better than watching the film versions; it really brought out the contrast between the humour and romance of the first two acts, and the tragedy and tension of the rest of the play. A full display of photographs and pupil comments will be appearing shortly on the upstairs English corridor.

Miss Score would like to extend particular thanks to Mr Stackpoole who co-organised the trip, and to the English staff who accompanied the pupils, Miss Clack, Miss Brown and our student, Miss Kilroe.
