Health and Social Care/SHD Diploma

Childwall School A Specialist Sports and Science College

Childwall School A Specialist Sports and Science College

This term the Society, Health and Development Diploma and Health and Social Care groups have been busy.

In October we went to the Liverpool Disabled Living Centre Open Day, at Lifehouse in Brunswick Dock. Here we had a tour and a talk by Karen Kettle, a Speech and Language Therapist. We tried out a variety of aids to make communication more effective for individuals who have hearing, speech or sight impairments. Here you can see learners from the BTEC National yr12 group trying out spectacles which help improve sight.

The SHD Diploma and H&S Care BTEC groups, studying health and safety, have carried out risk assessments of a local swing park.

Throughout the term, we have had numerous speakers come into our classes. We rely on the expert knowledge of the wide range of staff we have onsite, Mr Phillips; Mrs Densmore; Mrs Gilford; Natalie Wray and PC Brady are justsome of those have all come to talk to various groups, about how the school works in partnership and their role within Chldwall Sports College. In November, Kate Moore, from The Brook came to chat to the SHD Diploma group about the support they provide for teenagers and how they work in the local community.

In December the SHD Diploma group organised a coffee morning in support of the Alder Hey Imagine Appeal and raised £167 in just 15 minutes one break time. Thanks to Mrs Gleeson and well done to all!

The SHD Diploma group who are taught part of their course by the staff at Alder Hey are currently on their second series work placements. Learners are having a highly educational and thoroughly enjoyable time in a variety of areas from A&E to specialist wards. This is an essential part of their learning and provides them with valuable experience for their future careers.
