Health & Social Care and Society, Health & Development
This department offers a variety of courses within the 14-19 curriculum. It is a popular vocational subject, available to all Key Stage 4 and 5 learners.
At Key Stage 4, both Level 1 and Level 2 courses are available:
- A Foundation Award in Caring for Children is a Level 1 qualification, equivalent to 3 GCSEs grades D-G. It is a modular course and learners must undertake work experience in a setting with children under 8 years old.

- Society, Health and Development Higher Diploma, is a Level 2 qualification equivalent to 7 GCSEs grades A*-C. It consists of 9 units of Principal Learning; Functional Maths, English and ICT; 10 days work experience; Personal, learning and thinking skills and Additional and Specialist Learning.

Bringing Learning to Life
A variety of visiting speakers and external visits are to take place in 2010-2011:
- The department brings learning to life by inviting in a wide range of teaching and support staff into the classroom; to discuss their role or area of expertise.
- A complementary therapist will deliver a session to the BTEC National group.
- The SHD Advanced Diploma group will receive Safeguarding Training from Aim Higher at Liverpool University.
- The BTEC National group will visit the Neuro Support Centre to research communication problems with patients who have dysfunctions of the central nervous system.
- SHD learners will receive a tour of the Community Justice Centre, to learn about its role in society.
- Both the BTEC National Group and the BTEC First groups will visit the Disabled Living Centre. They will each receive a tour and a talk by an Occupational Therapist.
- The ‘City Safe’ Team will help the SHD Advanced Diploma group with their research on Partnership working.
- A physiotherapist will deliver sessions to both the BTEC First and the BTEC National groups on anatomy and physiology, at different levels.
- The BTEC National group will receive a tour of the Royal Wavertree School for the blind. They will research how to communicate with blind and disabled children.
- A dietician will come to the BTEC First and BTEC National groups to discuss health eating.
- A Community Support Officer will visit to discuss their role with the SHD group.
- SHD learners will receive a tour of the NSPCC Hargreaves Centre, where they will research how they work in partnership.
- All advanced learners will receive training on risk assessment and management.
- The BTEC First group will all attend work placements as an integral part of their course.
- The BTEC National Group will visit the Deaf Resource Base at Broadgreen International School. Here we will research how to communicate with hearing impaired children.
- A First Aid course will be arranged for all Heath and Social Care learners, to complement their coursework content.
- Wavertree Nursing Home provides a tour and a discussion to the BTEC National group, on how to communicate with their elderly residents.
- All SHD learners will take an active role in the ‘Inside Justice Week’ of events, where we will visit the court in St Georges Hall and take part in a mock trial.
- SHD Advanced Diploma learners will attend The Royal Liverpool Children’s NHS Trust Hospital (Alder Hey) each Tuesday; where they will be taught their Principal Learning and go out into the Hospital Trust to attend placements.
- SHD Higher Diploma learners will attend Alsop High School, where they will be taught their Principal Learning by Alsop staff and Training Plus Merseyside.
The department aims to embrace the vocational nature of the subjects. Learning takes place not only in the classroom, but we make use of our local facilities and surroundings in bring learning to life.
