Why Study Mathematics?

Mathematics equips pupils with a uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem solving skills, and the ability to think in abstract ways. Mathematics is important in everyday life, many forms of employment, science and technology, medicine, the economy, the environment and development, and in public decision-making.

Different cultures have contributed to the development and application of mathematics. Today, the subject transcends cultural boundaries and its importance is universally recognized.

Furthermore Mathematics is a qualification that is required by most employers and is needed for entry to further or higher education therefore it is a vital subject to study.

Homework

Pupils should be set at least one piece of homework per week. We subscribe to the popular My Maths website for which every pupil has an individual log in so that they can record their scores and track their own progress. This is monitored and if homework is incomplete or unsatisfactory this will be followed up by class teachers and if it remains incomplete parents will be informed. If you are a parent you can also use this log in to monitor your child’s homework.

How Can I Help My Child?

Many parents find that the way maths is taught now is different to their experience. If there are any aspects of maths you would like to know more about, talk to your child’s teacher.

You should encourage your child to practise and consolidate skills such as mental arithmetic, solving equations, working out angles and calculating an average. These skills are necessary for solving the ‘bigger’ problems they will encounter as their maths develops. You can also encourage your child to engage with maths in the media, looking at how graphs and numbers are used to support arguments and encouraging them to question the reasonableness of what they are presented with.

For more information on the programmes of study at key stage 3 and what skills are involved at each National Curriculum level and for specific ideas on how to help your child to progress to the next level please click on the link to the document below.

Assessment

At GCSE level there are two levels of entry: Higher and Foundation. The grades awarded range from A* to D at Higher level and C to G at Foundation level. Your child will be entered at the appropriate tier at the end of year 9 based on their end of year level.

Currently we offer different pathways dependant on a child’s ability to best support pupils in reaching their full potential. The majority of pupils will sit modular exams which take place at several times during the year (November, March, June). If you are unsure or you have any queries relating to what exams your child will be sitting and when do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.
