C.V. Writing Guides

There are C.V. templates available in Microsoft Word, to use them click on General Templates on the task pane on the right on the screen.

Go to the Other Documents tab and double click on the Resume Wizard icon.

Follow the instructions on the screen to complete your C.V. Such as name, address and phone number.

Choose a Contempory or Elegant style and an Entry level C.V.

Remember to spell check and save your C.V.

Some Hints

  • It will take some time to produce a great CV but it is worth it. You can use it to apply for a job; send it out with a letter to companies you would like to work for; and it can help you to fill in application forms.
  • Be positive but don’t tell lies as CV checking does happen.
  • Highlight your skills such as computers software you use, work experience, extra curricular activities, achievements outside school.
  • Action verbs work well. Words like 'organised', 'created', and 'directed' show that you are intelligent and motivated.
  • Don’t use too many different typefaces and fancy effects and don’t print your CV on coloured paper so yours will stand out.
  • How many pages? One side of A4 ideally - no more than two pages.

Once you have done your CV, get someone else to check it to see that it makes sense, is clear and there are no spelling mistakes.
