Key Stage 3

Year 7, 8 and 9 follow the Exploring science Scheme of Work. This encompasses all aspects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Some of the scientific ideas covered in Science include;

  • Tissues and transplants
  • Ecology
  • Classification
  • Acids and alkalis
  • Materials from Earth
  • Sustainable living
  • Electricity
  • Forces
  • The solar system
  • How science works
  • Practical investigations
  • Evaluative and self assessment skills

The course delivered is wide ranging and introduces important scientific concepts and develops the skills needed to study science successfully. The breadth and content of this course brings together important elements of the science disciplines to establish a curiosity about phenomena in the world around us. It offers opportunities to engage learners at many levels, linking direct practical experience with scientific ideas. They discover how scientific ideas contribute to technological change – affecting industry, business and medicine and improving quality of life. They trace the development of science worldwide and recognise its cultural significance. They learn to question and discuss issues that may affect their own lives, the directions of societies and the future of the world.

Key Stage 4

GCSE Year 10 and 11

The Year 10 and 11 pupils have the opportunity to follow a variety of courses to gain qualifications in Science. The Science GCSEs on offer here at Childwall follow the OCR 21st Century Science Schemes of Work and a choice of courses is on offer. They will choose one of the following pathways at the beginning of year 10 depending on their strengths and interests.

  • GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics. (three GCSEs)
  • GCSE Core science and Biology GCSE
  • GCSE Core science and Chemistry GCSE
  • GCSE Core science and Additional Applied GCSE
  • GCSE Core science and Astronomy GCSE
  • OCR Nationals: This course is completed over a period of two years and the qualification is the equivalent to 2 GCSEs.

Most pupils leave with two or more GCSEs in science and so have the opportunity to move on to study science in Key Stage 5.

Key Stage 5

At present, Childwall offers pupils that wish to study A-Levels in science the opportunity to study both Biology and Chemistry. We also enable pupils to study A-Level Physics as part of our sixth collaborative with King Davis High School.
For part of their AS Biology course, our pupils attend a field trip. This course enables real life application of the theories and also is part of their assessment at GCSE. The study included.

  • Sand dune progression
  • Classification
  • Quadrates
  • Chemical testing of soil and water
  • Wind speed
  • River ecology
  • Kick sampling
  • Depth and speed of rivers
