Our department provides a vibrant and diverse learning environment for all pupils. Every pupil at KS3 has the opportunity to take part in food technology lessons. The topics covered are:
Pupils design new recipes and produce high quality dishes weekly. Pupils also have the opportunity to carry out nutritional modelling and sensory analysis on foods produced. Our department prides itself on the excellent standard of work produced and it’s assessment for learning techniques. Pupils are involved in their own target setting and levelling at the end of each unit of work.
Catering is available for pupils to choose in KS4. This subject consists of practical work, coursework and a written examination. Pupils develop their catering skills each week by carrying out focused practical tasks and challenges such as ‘Ready, Steady, Cook’. The atmosphere in the Catering room is always lively and positive as pupils enjoy practical work. The standard of work is very high as is evident in the examination photographs shown.
This department has an excellent list of partners who help provide an enriched experience for all of our pupils. We thoroughly enjoy visits from professional chef Phil Mackenzie, the Vegetarian Society, parents of pupils and other food partners. We are involved in many whole school events such as open evening, international day and health day, all of which contribute to the ethos of our school.
The success of this department is based on the hard work and dedication of both staff and pupils. Pupils’ successes are celebrated regularly and this department also organizes a ‘Catering Reward Residential’ for pupils who work hard throughout the school year. It is an excellent trip which helps pupils to develop their catering skills and become a real team member.
